O'Leary Plumbing & Heating Showcases Alternative to High Energy Costs as Part of Wisconsins's 2008 Solar Tour

Home and business owners around the state are sharing their secret: renewable energy is technology for today!  The public is invited to see renewable energy up close during the 2008 Wisconsin Solar Tour, October 3rd  & 4th.

On Friday, October 3rd, O’Leary’s Office & Shop will be open for tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m

O’Leary’s entire facility, built in 2000, is heated by in-floor radiant heat and cooled by a high velocity cooling system.  The building’s roof holds 8 solar collector panels absorbing the sun’s energy and transferring the heat into water as it moves through a copper tubing system. The hot water is used for the radiant heating system.  “A solar heating system saves energy, reduces utility costs and produces clean energy. said Kevin O’Leary, O’Leary’s Heating Division Manager.

The Wisconsin Solar Tour, sponsored by Midwest Renewable Energy Association & Focus on Energy, features nearly 150 sites around the state open to the public for free tours. Sites will showcase advances in energy efficient construction, new products, sustainable landscaping and renewable energy technologies.  For additional site locations log onto: www.the-mrea.org or call 1-715-592-6595 to receive a guide via mail.

Customer Appreciation Open House in honor of O’Leary’s 50th Birthday
Saturday, October 11th, from 9:30 am to 12:00,
bring your family and join us for a fun morning of pumpkin decorating & puppet show.  We’ll have the pumpkins, decorating supplies and refreshments.  All you need to bring is your imagination.  Decorated pumpkins, in all age groups, will be judged and prizes awarded at 11:45. At 10:30 the Puppet Story Theater will entertain with their quirky fleet of puppets.  You won’t just sit and watch, you’ll play an interactive role in the show.

You’ll also have the opportunity to see first hand our “green” building & energy solutions.  Observe a solar water heating system from roof solar panels to hot water output and learn how a geothermal system heats and cools a Wisconsin home. You’ll be able to feel the heat of in-floor heating and test water saving fixtures & faucets, a constant pressure well pump system and learn about “green” household products.

Join us for a fun-filled morning at O’Leary Plumbing & Heating located at 2720 Buell Drive in East Troy.

Tip of the Month

Sprinkling your lawn can have an impact on your well system.

During dryer weather periods many homeowners wish to maintain the lush green lawn and colorful flowerbeds they’ve enjoyed throughout the summer. Sprinkling can have an impact on your well system by placing strain on the pump.
A properly functioning system will allow you to fill a 5-gallon bucket, after a period of sprinkling, before your pump starts working again. The best way to avoid problems and assure the flow of water you need is to properly maintain your equipment.
Signs your system may need some attention are:

  1. Well pump frequently starts & stops
  2. Well pump runs continuously or for an extended period of time
  3. Well seems to pump less water
  4. Low water pressure after use

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms above, give us a call.

Just a reminder: If your well area was flooded or has standing water nearby, testing your well water for bacteria will give you peace of mind in knowing you and your family are drinking safe water.

Going Green?

Heating People Is the Most Efficient Way to Use Modern Technology
By Lawrence V. Drake

Alternative energy sources require alternative delivery methods.  Conventional heating and cooling systems are difficult to adapt efficiently to energy sources they were not designed to handle.  The good news about radiant heating is that it is the most efficient and effective heat delivery system known and is compatible with almost any energy source.

Radiant heating or cooling refers to the transfer of heat energy from one place to another.  It works similar to a light bulb whose light is produced in one location and radiates out until it strikes another object.  Light is not visible as it travels through space, only when it strikes another object and illuminates it.  When we switch on the light, it seems that light fills the room, but in fact, we are seeing the illuminated surfaces.  Radiant heating works exactly the same way only on a much lower wavelength.  Heat is created by one surface and radiates as energy to other surfaces in the space.  It reverts back into heat when it strikes a surface and raises the temperature of that surface.

We receive heat from any surface that is warmer than our body surface temperature and we radiate heat to any surface that is cooler than we are.  When we artificially heat or cool a surface in the room, for example the floor, we can control when and how much heat our body gains or loses.
