Home Heating System Maintenance
The last days of summer are here and it's time to start thinking about the colder weather that's coming. Now is the time to inspect your home heating system and perform any needed maintenance. Don't leave yourself stranded by waiting until the first cold snap! There are several things you can do yourself to check your heating system.
- Check the area around the furnace to make sure nothing flammable has been stored there over the summer.
- Change the filter. Many units will not run at all with a clogged filter. Others will run inefficiently. Check your owner's manual for the correct filter replacement schedule. When changing the filter, be sure it is installed in the correct way, and that the access panel is closed completely. A good tip is to write the date on the filter frame so you will know how long it's been in use.
- Turn the furnace on to see if it will start properly. If you have central air conditioning, remember to switch the thermostat to heat.
- Have your heating system checked at least once a year by a licensed contractor. This can be very important to ensure that your unit is running safely.
