The bathroom is one of the busiest rooms in the home. When it’s time to remodel, consider using water-conserving bathroom products and technologies. By saving water with select products, you may be able to include a luxurious custom shower or two-person soaking bath and still be water-conscious.
We recommend energy efficient equipment and use environmentally sound products, such as water-saving products offered by Kohler.

Tankless, Heat Pump and Hybrid Water Heaters
Tankless Water Heaters, also called instantaneous or on-demand water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed. Traditional storage water heaters produce standby energy losses that cost you money. We do not leave our homes heated while vacationing. We only heat our homes when there is a demand for heat. In the same way, a Tankless Water Heater is used only when there is a demand for hot water.
Tankless Water Heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. As a result, Tankless Water Heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don't need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water. Some smaller Tankless Water Heaters, however, cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous, multiple uses in large households. For example, taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time can stretch a Tankless Water Heater to its limit. To overcome this problem, you can install a “whole house” type Tankless Water Heater or install two or more Tankless Water Heaters, connected in parallel for simultaneous demands of hot water. You can also install separate Tankless Water Heaters for appliances—such as a clothes washer or dishwater—that use a lot of hot water in your home.
Other applications for Tankless Water Heaters include the following:
- Remote BBQ or outdoor sink
- Poolhouse or pool shower
- Remote bathrooms or hot tubs
- To serve as a booster, eliminating long pipe runs, for solar water heating systems, dishwashers and sanitation.

On December 17, 2010, President Obama signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. This law extends the tax credits for energy efficiency into 2011, BUT at lower levels. The levels revert back to those in effect in 2006 and 2007, which were 10% of the cost of the improvement, up to $500.
For detailed information on what credits are available, visit www.energystar.gov/taxcredits
As required by law, please keep your receipt(s) of purchase/installation and print out the Manufacturer's Certification document below for tax record purposes.

Water Softening and Iron Filtering
Whether your home is serviced by a municipal water system or private well, you should consider a water softener. Water soaks through the earth and picks up elements that can change its taste, color and safety, alter its feel, reduce its capacity to wash and clog plumbing. High concentrates of calcium and magnesium make water “hard”. A water softening system eliminates hard water problems, making your clothes brighter, dishes cleaner and helps your appliances last longer. Metered control valves adjust regeneration frequency and salt use minimizing the impact on the environment.
The water quality experts at O’Leary Plumbing & Heating can help. First, they will test your water to recommend the correct softener for your home and life style, then install and maintain the unit. (Your investment will last from 15 to 20 years.) O’Leary only installs metered softeners, saving from 30% to 50% salt usage over other softeners and reducing extra discharge into our sewer systems, making it more environmentally friendly.

Reverse Osmosis Drinking System
You can have safe, clean, delicious drinking water, better than bottled water quality, at the touch of a button right in your kitchen by installing a Reverse Osmosis Drinking System.
As an example, check out www.reo-pure.com for more information on systems supplied by Reo-Pure.
In the United States, household drinking water purification systems, including a reverse osmosis step, are commonly used for improving water for drinking and cooking.
Such systems typically include four or five stages:
-
a sediment filter to trap particles including rust and calcium carbonate
-
optionally a second sediment filter with smaller pores
-
an activated carbon filter to trap organic chemicals, and chlorine which will attack and degrade TFC reverse osmosis membranes
-
a reverse osmosis (RO) filter which is a thin film composite membrane (TFM or TFC)
-
optionally a second carbon filter to capture those chemicals not removed by the RO membrane.
-
optionally an ultra-violet lamp is used for disinfection of any microbes that may escape filtering by the reverse osmosis membrane.

Ultraviolet (UV) Systems
For chemical-free water disinfection, we offer the installation of ultraviolet (UV) water purification systems. These systems effectively kill bacteria, viruses, mold spores, fungi, oocysts (cryptospridium and giardia) and other microbiological contaminants. UV systems work in conjunction with pre-filtration systems which need to be in place to remove sediment and other general contaminants. This is required to ensure that an adequate dose of ultraviolet light reaches the microorganisms and to ensure complete disinfection.
As an example, check out www.trojanuv.com for more information on systems supplied by Trojan UV.
Top candidates for UV disinfection systems include institutions, residential consumers and businesses such as rural homes and cottages, nursing homes, hospitals, schools, hotels, restaurants, resorts and camps.
