What is hydro-jetting — and how does O'Leary clear drains instead?

Hydro-jetting is a real industry method. We don't offer it. Here's what it means, and what we do for stubborn clogs in southeast Wisconsin.

Definition: what hydro-jetting actually is

Hydro-jetting is high-pressure water cleaning of a drain or sewer line. We run a specialized hose with a forward- and reverse-facing nozzle down into the line; a trailer-mounted or truck-mounted pump delivers 2,000–4,000 PSI of water at 8–18 gallons per minute. The forward jets break up the blockage; the reverse jets propel the hose deeper into the line and scour the pipe wall on the way back.

Think of the difference between hosing mud off a driveway with a regular garden hose vs a pressure washer. A drain snake punches a hole through a blockage; hydro-jetting cleans the pipe wall back to its original diameter.

When hydro-jetting is the right call

  • Grease buildup in kitchen lines. Years of grease cools and coats the inside of the drain pipe. A cable snake punches a small hole; the grease re-flows and re-blocks in weeks. Hydro-jetting strips the wall back to bare pipe.
  • Tree-root intrusion. Roots find the pipe joints in clay or older cast-iron sewer mains and grow into the line. A snake cuts the visible roots; hydro-jetting cuts and flushes them. We follow up every root job with a sewer camera to confirm and to recommend whether a liner, spot repair, or trenchless replacement is warranted.
  • Mineral scale in older lines. Cast-iron pipes in Lake Country homes from the 1960s/70s often have a thick scale buildup that reduces the effective ID by 30–50%. Jetting can scour it. (If the iron is itself failing — cracking or losing structural integrity — jetting can make it worse; see Failure modes below.)
  • Repeated clogs in the same line. If you've snaked the same kitchen or laundry line 2–3 times in a year, the line itself is the problem. Jet it, camera it, fix it.
  • Preventive maintenance for restaurants, churches, and other institutional sites. Annual or semi-annual hydro-jetting is the standard preventive on commercial kitchen and grease-laden lines — a quarter of what an emergency callout costs.

When hydro-jetting is the wrong call

  • Compromised pipe. If the sewer camera shows cracked, collapsed, or "swiss-cheese" cast iron, jetting at full pressure can blow the line out. We drop the pressure dramatically — or we don't jet at all — depending on what we see in the camera.
  • Single soft clog. If you have one ordinary kitchen clog from someone overstuffing the disposal, a cable snake is the right tool and a tenth of the price.
  • Frozen line. Jetting introduces water; in mid-January that water can re-freeze before we close the lid. We thaw with steam or heat tape, then clean.

Failure modes we see in the field

  • Jet-without-camera. The most common failure. A contractor jets a line, declares it clear, and leaves. Three weeks later the homeowner has a sewer back-up because nobody saw the cracked hub joint. Every jet job at O'Leary ends with a sewer camera pass. No exceptions.
  • Wrong nozzle. A nozzle that's great on grease is wrong on roots; a root-cutter on grease wastes pressure. We carry six nozzles on the truck and match them to the diagnosis.
  • Cleanout access. A jet needs a cleanout to enter the line at; older Lake Country homes don't always have one accessible. We install a 4" cleanout where needed — usually $[verify: 350–750] depending on where the line surfaces.

Proof: a typical Lake Geneva commercial kitchen call

A Lake Geneva restaurant called us on a Sunday with a backed-up triple sink and waste piling up on the line cook's floor. We responded within [verify: typical response time for emergency, ~60–90 minutes]. Initial cable snake punched it open enough to get the kitchen running again. The next morning — per the kitchen manager's request — we returned with the jetter, ran the full grease-cutting nozzle through 150 feet of 4" line at 3,500 PSI, and finished with a camera. The camera showed two soft joints that we recommended for a future liner.

  • Mechanical drain cleaning with the right cable and head for the line
  • Camera-guided inspection so we can see grease, roots, offsets, or breaks
  • Targeted repair recommendations when the camera shows a structural issue

Total: about 90 minutes of jetting + camera. The restaurant put us on a quarterly preventive plan; we haven't been called back on an emergency in [verify: customer-specific data; this should be replaced with a real timeline when published].
