The premise
Were a multi-brand contractor. We install York (HVAC), Lennox (HVAC), Bradford White (water heaters), and a few others depending on the project. Most contractors are a single-brand dealer because the brand offers training, marketing co-op, and rebate support. We chose to stay multi-brand so we can recommend the right unit for the project, not the unit weve been told to sell.
Here's what we actually see in the field.
HVAC: York vs Lennox
York (Johnson Controls family)
What we like:
- Strong cold-climate heat pump lineup. The Affinity / YHM line operates down to deep negative temps.
- Solid build quality, particularly on the gas furnaces. Heat exchangers are well-engineered.
- Parts pipeline through Johnson Controls distribution is reliable and fast in our region.
- 10-year parts warranty standard with registered installation.
- Compatible with a wide range of third-party controls (good for retrofits).
What to watch:
- Higher-tier variable-speed models (Affinity) get expensive fast; lower-tier (LX) is competitively priced.
- Refrigerant-side service: like any modern system, requires a tech with proper electronic refrigerant gauges and the manufacturers training. Were factory-trained.
Lennox
What we like:
- Industry-leading variable-speed inverter compressors on the SLP98V / XC25 / SL28XCV lines.
- iComfort thermostat ecosystem is well-developed for whole-home integration.
- Top-tier high-efficiency models hit best-in-class SEER2 and AFUE numbers.
What to watch:
- Parts pipeline has been a sustained challenge. Some specialty parts (boards, variable-speed motors) have run [verify: 4-12 week lead times] over the last two years. Were honest with customers about this when quoting.
- Lennox-only parts. Some service work that would be quick on a York or Carrier becomes a wait on a Lennox if a specialty part fails.
- Premium pricing.
How we choose between them
- For a cold-climate heat pump in the southeast Wisconsin climate, York Affinity is our most-installed line.
- For a top-of-spec variable-speed gas furnace + AC where the customer prioritizes the best comfort tech, Lennox is competitive.
- For a mid-range high-efficiency replacement, York LX or comparable lines deliver more for the dollar.
Water heaters: Bradford White
Why we standardize on it
Bradford White is the brand we install almost universally for tank water heaters because:
- Contractor-only distribution. Bradford White is not sold at big-box stores. The supply chain is contractor-direct, which means quality control on installation and reduced "homeowner-installed" warranty issues.
- Hydrojet™ cold-water inlet reduces sediment turbulence, extends tank life in hard-water areas (which describes virtually all of our service area).
- Vitraglas™ tank lining with built-in cathodic protection (sacrificial magnesium anode rod). On well water with iron, we often swap to an aluminum-zinc anode for longer life.
- Parts pipeline through local supply houses is reliable.
Alternatives we install
For tankless: Navien (NPE-A series for high-output condensing), Rinnai, and Bradford White (their tankless line). For specialty hybrid heat-pump water heaters: Rheem ProTerra and Bradford Whites heat-pump line.
The point: your installer matters more than your brand
A great installer with a mid-tier brand outperforms a mediocre installer with a premium brand. Every time. What's actually going to determine whether your equipment lasts:
- Correct sizing (Manual J load calc, not a rule of thumb).
- Correct refrigerant charge (within 2% of spec).
- Correct ductwork sealing + insulation.
- Correct combustion analysis on gas equipment.
- Correct water-quality conditioning upstream.
- Annual maintenance for the life of the equipment.
All six of these are about the installer and the post-install service relationship, not the brand.
