Three different problems
- Iron filter removes dissolved iron and manganese (the rust-staining minerals).
- UV sterilizer kills bacteria and viruses (microbiological contamination).
- Water softener removes calcium and magnesium hardness (the scale-causing minerals).
They treat different things. Most well homes in our service area need at least two of the three, and they install in a specific order.
Diagnostic flow: how to tell what you need
Test 1: hardness (grains per gallon)
- Under 3 gpg: no softener needed.
- 3-7 gpg: softener helps; not urgent.
- Over 7 gpg: softener strongly recommended (most Walworth County homes).
Test 2: iron (ppm)
- Under 0.3 ppm: no iron filter needed.
- 0.3-1.0 ppm: iron filter recommended (visible staining starts).
- Over 1.0 ppm: iron filter mandatory if you want soft water that stays soft.
Test 3: manganese (ppm)
- Under 0.05 ppm: no special treatment.
- Over 0.05 ppm: greensand or catalytic iron-filter media (treats both iron + manganese).
Test 4: bacteriological (coliform + e. coli)
- Coliform present: shock-chlorinate the well + continuous UV sterilization recommended.
- E. coli present: do not drink the water; immediate well disinfection + UV install.
Test 5: pH
- Under 6.5: acidic water can corrode pipes and stain blue-green on copper fixtures. Neutralizer recommended.
- 6.5-8.5: normal range, no treatment for pH.
- Over 8.5: alkaline; less common in our area.
The installation order (this is critical)
The right sequence in most Walworth/Waukesha/Racine well homes:
- Well pump → pressure tank.
- Acid neutralizer (if pH is low). Treats first because acid attacks downstream equipment.
- Iron filter (if iron or manganese present). Treats before the softener because iron fouls softener resin.
- UV sterilizer (if bacteriological issues). Treats after particulate filtration so the UV light can reach every molecule.
- Softener. Treats hardness once iron is removed.
- Reverse osmosis at kitchen sink. Drinking water polishing.
Putting a softener before an iron filter is the most common DIY mistake we re-engineer in this region. Iron fouls the resin bed and the softener fails silently — the unit cycles, uses salt, but produces increasingly hard water.
What each system actually does
Iron filter (3 main types)
- Air-injection oxidation: aerates incoming water, precipitates iron, traps in media bed. Self-backwashing. No salt, no chemicals. Good for moderate iron (1-10 ppm).
- Greensand / catalytic media: uses potassium permanganate as an oxidizer. Treats iron + manganese. Good for mid-range iron.
- Chlorination + carbon: small chlorinator injects sodium hypochlorite; iron oxidizes in a retention tank; carbon bed downstream removes chlorine + oxidized iron. For very high iron or iron bacteria.
UV sterilizer
A simple inline housing with a UV lamp that kills microorganisms as water passes through. Requires:
- Pre-filtration (5 micron typical) so the UV light isn't blocked by particles.
- Annual lamp replacement (lamps lose intensity over time).
- Annual sleeve cleaning.
- Continuous electrical supply — the lamp is on 24/7.
Softener
Ion-exchange resin tank + brine tank with salt. Regenerates on schedule or on metered usage. See the primer.
