Definition: what a water softener actually does
A water softener is a tank-based filtration system that removes calcium and magnesium from your incoming water. Those two minerals are what make water "hard." A softener uses a process called ion exchange: incoming water flows through a bed of small resin beads that swap the hard calcium/magnesium ions for soft sodium (or potassium) ions. A regular regeneration cycle, triggered by a brine tank full of salt, flushes the captured hardness out to the drain and recharges the beads.
The result: water that lathers, rinses cleanly, doesn't scale your fixtures, and extends the life of every appliance it touches.
When you need one (and the Walworth County answer)
In Walworth County, almost every well home and most municipal supplies test out at 10–25 grains per gallon (gpg) of hardness. Anything above 7 gpg is "very hard" by the U.S. Geological Survey scale. Wisconsin sits on a carbonate-rich aquifer; soft water is the exception, not the rule.
You almost certainly need one if you see any two of these:
- White, crusty scale on faucets and showerheads
- Laundry that feels stiff, looks dingy, or wears out fast
- Cloudy glassware out of the dishwasher
- Soap that won't lather (more product, less foam)
- A water heater that stops keeping up faster than its warranty
- Dry skin or "squeaky" hair after a shower

Failure modes: where softeners go wrong
Hard water is corrosive over a 10-year time horizon. Here's what untreated water actually costs:
- Water heaters fail 30–50% faster. Sediment + scale collect on the burner or element, the unit overworks, and the tank rusts from the bottom up. A softener typically adds 4–6 years to a tank's life.
- Dishwashers and washing machines wear seals and heating coils early. [verify: appliance manufacturer warranty terms — some void warranties on hard water above 10 gpg].
- Plumbing valves stop sealing. Toilet flappers, shut-off valves, pressure regulators — anything with rubber or a small orifice — gets scaled and stops working.
And failure modes of softeners we see in the field:
- Undersized unit. A 24,000-grain unit on a 4-bathroom home regenerates every 36 hours and burns through salt. A correctly sized unit regenerates every 6–10 days. Sizing matters more than brand.
- Salt bridge in the brine tank. A crust of salt forms across the top, the water below can't dissolve it, and the unit stops regenerating. Easy fix — break it up with a broom handle — but most homeowners don't know to check.

Proof: what we install, where, and why
Across Walworth, Waukesha, and Racine Counties we install both cabinet-style units (softener and brine tank in one enclosure — good for tight basements and lake-cabin utility rooms) and two-tank twin systems (separate mineral and brine tanks; one unit regenerates while the other softens, so you never run out of soft water). Twin systems are the right call for 5+ bathroom homes and short-term-rental properties where peak demand can't be predicted.
On a 4-person East Troy home with 18-gpg well water we recently installed a 40,000-grain twin-tank system with a 5-stage iron filter ahead of it. The water softener uses about 40–60 pounds of salt per month in that configuration; the iron filter regenerates on its own loop with no salt.
