Why is my well water rusty? (Iron + manganese in Wisconsin wells)

Orange stains on porcelain, brown streaks in the toilet, metallic-tasting coffee — that's iron. Sometimes its quieter cousin manganese. Here's the diagnostic.

Definition: what's actually in your water

"Rusty" well water is almost always one of two minerals — or both.

  • Iron (Fe). Dissolved ferrous iron is invisible coming out of the well. As soon as it hits oxygen — air in the toilet tank, water sitting in a glass, the inside of your dishwasher — it oxidizes to ferric iron and turns orange-brown. That's the rust streak in the toilet, the orange ring around the bathtub drain, the spots on your white shirts after a wash.
  • Manganese (Mn). Iron's quieter cousin. It causes a black or dark-purple stain instead of orange. You'll see it on white laundry and inside the dishwasher. Manganese above 0.05 mg/L stains; above 0.3 mg/L is a health concern per EPA secondary standards.

Both are extremely common in southeast Wisconsin wells. The aquifer that supplies Walworth, Waukesha, and Racine Counties runs through iron-rich sandstone and glacial till. Above 0.3 ppm iron, you'll see staining. Above 1.0 ppm, every white surface in your house gets it.

When to act on it

A simple water test tells you three things you need to know:

  • Total iron (ppm) — anything over 0.3 ppm stains.
  • Manganese (ppm) — anything over 0.05 ppm stains.
  • pH — iron treatment behaves very differently at pH 6.5 vs 8.0.

You can get a hardware-store strip kit, but those only give you total iron and miss the distinction between dissolved (ferrous) and oxidized (ferric) iron — which is the most important diagnostic for picking the right filter. We bring a field titration kit on every free in-home water test so we can measure both forms separately.

Failure modes: what happens if you ignore it

  • Plumbing fixtures stain permanently. Iron etches into porcelain after about a year. Once it's set, no off-the-shelf cleaner removes it — only acid-based products that also etch the surface.
  • Water heaters fail early. Iron precipitates into sediment at the bottom of the tank, the burner overworks, and the unit fails [verify: 30-50% faster than a soft-water installation; this matches our field data but every home is different].
  • Water softeners get fouled. A softener that runs on iron-loaded water will lose 30–50% of its capacity within 18–24 months. The resin bed gets coated, ion exchange stops working, and you're paying for a softener that no longer softens. Always treat iron upstream of the softener.
  • Iron bacteria. A specific bacteria thrives on dissolved iron and forms a slimy red-brown biofilm in toilet tanks, well casings, and pump pipes. It's not a direct health risk but it can clog small orifices and generate odors. Proof: the three iron-treatment paths we install

The right filter depends on what kind of iron you have:

1. Aeration + filter (best for moderate iron, ferrous form)

An air-injection system aerates incoming water, oxidizing dissolved iron into particles that a media bed then traps. Backwashes itself. No salt, no chemicals. Works well at iron levels of 1–10 ppm. We install these on most Lake Geneva and East Troy well homes.

2. Greensand / catalytic media (best for iron + manganese together)

A greensand bed uses potassium permanganate to oxidize both iron and manganese, then catches the particles in the media. Best for homes with both minerals or with mid-range iron (0.3–3 ppm).

3. Chlorination + carbon (for iron bacteria or very high iron)

A small chlorinator injects sodium hypochlorite ahead of a retention tank; iron and any iron bacteria oxidize; a carbon filter downstream removes the chlorine and the oxidized iron. Required when iron is over 10 ppm or when iron bacteria are present.

The order matters. The correct sequence in almost every iron-affected well home is: well pump → iron filter → softener → drinking-water RO at the kitchen sink. Putting a softener before an iron filter is the single most common DIY mistake we re-engineer.
