Dock and pier electrical wiring on Geneva Lake: what to know

The code that protects lives near water is one of the strictest sections of the NEC. Here is what we install, what we won't touch, and why.

Definition: NEC Article 555 is the rule book

Dock, pier, and marina electrical falls under NEC Article 555 — Marinas, Boatyards, Floating Buildings, and Commercial and Noncommercial Docking Facilities. It is one of the most safety-critical sections of the National Electrical Code because the failure mode is electric shock drowning (ESD) — current leaking into the water from a damaged cord, a corroded connection, or a missing ground-fault device, and a swimmer entering that energized water.

Wisconsin enforces NEC under its statewide electrical code; Walworth, Waukesha, and Racine Counties all require an electrical permit and inspection for any new or modified dock circuit. There is no "just a small extension cord" loophole. [verify: current code edition adopted by each county; we always confirm on the permit application].

When you need a permitted electrical install

Anytime you plan to:

  • Run a new circuit from the house panel out to a pier or dock.
  • Add a boat-lift motor (almost always 120V or 240V hardwired).
  • Add pier or dock lighting (anything more than a battery-powered safety light).
  • Add a shore power pedestal for a boat at a private slip.
  • Replace a damaged dock cord assembly.

What the code requires (the big four)

  1. GFCI protection on every dock circuit, 100% of the time. Not just at the receptacle — the entire dock branch circuit must be ground-fault protected, typically at the disconnecting means in the house or in a remote pier-side panel.
  2. Emergency disconnecting means on shore, within sight of the dock. Anyone witnessing an in-water emergency must be able to kill power without going onto the dock or near the water.
  3. Marina-grade (wet-location) enclosures, conduit, and connectors everywhere outdoors. PVC conduit at minimum; some installations require stainless or marine-grade aluminum.
  4. Equipotential bonding of all metal parts within the "shock zone" (typically the 5-foot perimeter around the dock). This eliminates voltage differences that can drive current through a swimmer's body.

Failure modes: how dock electrical kills people

This is not a theoretical risk.

  • Damaged extension cord run into the lake. A homeowner extends a household 12-gauge cord out to a boat lift; the cord chafes against the pier, the insulation cracks, water gets in, current leaks into the lake. A swimmer touches a metal ladder rung and becomes the path to ground. Lethal.
  • Missing GFCI on a boat-lift motor circuit. A boat-lift motor with worn brushes can pass leakage current to the metal lift frame; with proper bonding + GFCI the breaker trips immediately; without it, the lift frame becomes energized.
  • Shore power without isolation. Boats plugged into shore power can introduce stray current through the boat's bonding system into the surrounding water. Galvanic isolators or isolation transformers are required for sustained shore-power use.
  • Aluminum wire inside a marine enclosure. Aluminum is banned in wet locations; corrodes; loses contact at terminations; arcs. A common DIY violation we find on takeover jobs.

Proof: what an O'Leary dock install looks like

A typical Geneva Lake project: 100-foot run from the house panel to a private pier with a boat lift and dock lights. We install:

  • Dedicated 240V/30A circuit at the house panel with a class-A GFCI breaker.
  • Underground PVC conduit from house to lake, properly buried below the frost line (Wisconsin code: [verify: current burial depth requirement, typically 18" minimum for residential]).
  • Marina-grade pedestal at the dock with an emergency-stop disconnect visible from shore.
  • Equipotential bonding loop tying together pier hardware, boat-lift frame, and grounding electrode.
  • Wet-rated dock lighting (low-voltage LED below decking; line-voltage LED post lights at pier head, marina-grade fixtures only).
  • Permit pulled with the [Town of Linn / City of Lake Geneva / etc. as applicable]; inspection scheduled and signed off; final paperwork delivered to the homeowner.

What we won't do

  • We will not energize a circuit without a permit and inspection. Period.
  • We will not approve a homeowner-installed run that doesn't meet 555. If we can't correct it on site, we recommend the replacement and walk through what's needed.
  • We do not run aluminum on docks.
